Excitement on Whitewater Rafts

Maneuvering rivers on whitewater rafts is different than using a kayak or smaller boat. Usually, the rafts are made with heavy, resilient plastic and are partially inflatable, looking somewhat like an inflatable air mattress.

Usually, whitewater rafts are used on rivers, much like whitewater kayaks are used. Passengers navigate down the river to experience the thrill and excitement of successfully managing to make it through the rapids and whitewater in one piece.

Adventures with Whitewater Rafts

Using whitewater rafts can be dangerous, particularly if the passengers are inexperienced or don’t have a professional guide to help them. Generally, guides are available to help rafters make it down the river. Accidents involving whitewater rafts often occur if the passengers are inexperienced or do not have a guide with them.

As with any whitewater adventure, you should be prepared. Equipment should be in good working order, especially the whitewater rafts, since they will be your main piece of equipment. Whether from equipment malfunction or inexperience, many have been seriously injured or died while using whitewater rafts. The Colorado River, which flows through the Grand Canyon, has had rafts literally disappear, along with those who were in the whitewater rafts.

There are varying difficulties of rapids that can be navigated by whitewater rafts. There are more gentle areas for those who are relatively inexperienced, and then there are those areas that are great challenges to even the most experienced rafters. Whitewater rapids can generally be found spread all over the United States. Idaho, Colorado, and many states on the East coast are just a few places where whitewater rivers can be found.

As whitewater rafting has become more popular over the last several years, there has been more concern from some about the environmental effects all of the extra people have on a wilderness area. Even though rafting can bring in more income to an area, along with more people comes more trash and that affects the wilderness more. The areas that are becoming popular with rafters have had to learn to balance the needs of the local economy with the needs of the environment.

Whether you are a novice or an expert, there is bound to be a river available for your level of expertise. Whitewater rafts have their own unique appeal since there really isn’t much between you and the rapids. Rivers and whitewater rafts can be dangerous unless you take precautions and use plain old common sense.
