Horses Tips
When you begin researching horses, tips seem to be coming at you left and right, and it can be difficult to sort out the important points that relate to your situation. What are the top things you need to know about horses that you can keep in a list of tips, simply reminding you of certain aspects of raising horses?
First of all, you must watch the amount of food that your horse takes in. Horses will overeat if allowed, so one tip to remember is to limit the feed available to your horse. Should your horse either overeat, eat bad food, or get into toxic weeds or plants in the pasture, you’ll probably notice symptoms of colic. This is bad stomach pains and gaseousness that will make your horse restless and unhappy.
Check your horse’s hooves regularly because foot diseases and injuries are common in horses. Navicular disease can cause the navicular bone in the foot to deteriorate and must be treated. Laminitis is a foot disease in horses that can permanently damage tissues of the foot if left untreated. If your horse’s feet seem swollen or tender, have a veterinarian examine them immediately.
Horses require plenty of exercise, and some breeds need more vigorous exercise than others. As long as weather allows, you should let your horses out into the pasture to roam daily, and you should be sure to run your horses and stretch their legs frequently. In converse, overexertion can cause a horse to become colicky, so you’ll want to find the happy medium.
Most of all, horses require general love and attention. You can spend time training your horse, but unless you maintain a close relationship, you’ll have little control over the horse’s actions, and you will never get to know the horse’s personality. A little tender loving care and quality time can make your relationship everything it should be.
